trail rules & tips: mountain biking

Trail rules are in place for a couple of important reasons. Firstly, to make sure everyone can enjoy a trail safely. Whether they are mountain bikers, walkers or horse riders. Secondly, to make sure that for years to come the trails are maintained, safe and not damaging to the environment.

Take a moment to read through these tips and rules, based on IMBA and local standards and please be aware of them whilst out on the mountain bike trails.

1. tidy up after yourself

2. be in control

3. if a trail is closed don't use it

4. be visible

5. protect the environment

1. tidy up after yourself

Never leave litter on the trail, in fact if you see some litter take it with you. Use those external pockets on your rucksac that you daren't use for anything else. Take special care to check your area after you've stopped for a food break or a bit of bike maintenance. return to top

2. be in control

Travel at a speed where you'll be in control if you would encounter something unexpected. Take special care on blind corners and trail ends. Also, it is important not to block a trail if you need to stop for any reason.

Know your limitations and ride within them. If you need to get off your bike then do so. Always realise the consequences of your riding.

Wear a helmet and consider wearing other mountain biking protection, especially if you are riding a new trail or bike. Make sure your bike is well maintained.

Ride with consideration for others. Don't overtake unless some one has indicated it is alright and they are aware of the faster rider behind. return to top

3. if a trail is closed don't use it

An obvious point but be sure not to break this rule. A trail will be closed for good reason. Riding it could endanger yourself or others. Be well prepared for your days riding and always know alternative routes in case of such eventualities. return to top

4. be visible

Be respectful to others. Slow down for walkers and take extra care not to scare animals near or on trails. Never assume that people have seen you until they look up and acknowledge you. return to top

5. protect the environment

Take time to maintain the trail and ride only when there is low impact to the trail. This will ensure riding will be possible in the future.

Learn how to avoid skidding. Don't cut corners or 'go round' marshy/boggy patches.

Wash your bike well, especially the tires if riding in a different location to reduce the spreading of plant disease. After heavy rain or snow don't ride trails that have soil that is extra susceptible to trail damage. return to top
