- riding and running -
We didn’t have much time to spare as we needed to head off to the nearest town for an appointment to get the baby scanned. With a quick browse through the paper we thought it would be nice to get some fresh air and watch others doing all the exercise for a change. As mentioned on our ‘other activities‘ page on our main site, there are literally dozens of other activities to take part in besides mountain biking (if you are so inclined).
On the agenda was a horse riding event just down the road at the local riding school. We thought that if we timed things right then the Kaiser marathon runners would be starting to come past the farm as well.
The riding event was very low key, only a couple of dozen riders were taking part. Now we don’t know a great deal about riding (Manu’s farm used to have one horse – but that was only for ploughing the fields in the old days). There was a bit of dressage, followed by single jumps then a jumping event. The gates were raised for the adults instead of some of the younger kids and their ponies. Not much more to say really. They jumped, we watched. It was refreshing seeing something else and enjoying a cold beer and the barbeque. Manu met up with a couple of local friends and I took the chance to photog
raph some of the riding.
We mentioned the Kaiser Marathon on our calendar page. This is a gruelling hill climbing marathon. Approx 40km and over 2000 vertical metres of ascent. Definitely not for the faint hearted. These sort of figures don’t worry me on the bike but send a chill down my spine thinking about running it. We watched some of the ‘pack’ coming past the farm. Quietly thinking to myself, ‘much prefer to be enjoying my beer that running up these mountains in this heat”. There were a large number of runners in the event, noticed that there were a few runners from the Great Britain and Ireland taking part as well.
As the winter season draws ever closer we’ll be looking for other events to watch or even take part in. The lifts are still open over here. Ellmau is the last to close at the end of October this year. Then there is a month or so break before the lifts open again for the skiing. Fun times!
