- not only wiener schnitzels -

If someone asked you to describe Austrian food, what would you say?  Maybe Wiener Schnitzel for main course, a slice of Apple Strudel for dessert.  Some might be a little more adventurous and suggest dumplings or goulash and perhaps a big slice of creamy cake for pudding.

Sure you can get all these wonderful dishes when you are on holiday but it really doesn’t stop there.  Peoples opinions are often developed because of the food they have eaten whilst on Austrian skiing holidays.  Imagine you are 1600m up a mountain and pop into the local mountain restaurant, the menu isn’t huge – strange that!

Not a problem, the locals do the basic traditional food very well.  Just as Gordon Ramsay likes to shout at people to put his point across, that ‘keeping it simple is the f*@king right answer’.  So embrace this, enjoy this type of food whilst on the mountain, for a weeks holiday there is still plenty of choice and I haven’t even started on the Schnapps yet!

There is choice though, we went to a restaurant yesterday.  Fantastic.  Join us over here and we’ll point you in the right direction.  The menu was still based on local produce which is the way we like it.  There was just an elegance and a touch of imagination that made us both very content.

After a glass of bubbles (cheers Paul – nice phrase!) we had carpaccio of deer with a seasonal berry syrup.  Followed by a superbly light wild berry sorbet.  For our main course there was juicy pork fillets served in a local ’stone mushroom’ sauce and a vast salad bar with a choices of over 20 different flavoured oils and balsamic vinegars.  Dessert was also fantastic, a melt in the mouth mousse from passion fruit and raspberries.  Add to this the local cheese selection to top off a truly wonderful meal.  We will be back.
