- mtb girl mauled -

An interesting mating danceJust read in the news about the 14 year old girl that was mauled by a ‘female grizzly bear’. Take a look at the article in the Times World News section. I was reading through the comments posted below the article. Notice a difference between the American comments and the British comments? Same language, but oh so different opinions. Good luck to the girl, surely if it was a grizzly in the middle of the night then anyone would have had problems. I don’t like the thought of a 800lb, 2m high bear at any time of the day. Well maybe if it was wearing a blue duffel coat and carrying a shabby suitcase.

You’ll be pleased to know that here in Austria, you won’t be bumping into any bears. Behind the farm we often see wild deer and mountain goats. At the top, near our mountain hut near Kitzbuehel you can often hear (and sometimes see) the marmots. A couple of times I’ve been mountain biking in quiet remote parts and seen the capercaillie. I took it as a compliment as he performed a rather flamboyant courtship dance. I backed off as this turkey sized bird has a huge beak and claws that I didn’t want anywhere near me!!
