Feed salt to the cows

It isn’t everyday that I’m asked to…

‘take this bucket of salt, find nine cows and feed it to them’.

We were going up to our mountain hut and had arranged to meet Manu’s sister Tini. She lives up at the mountain hut for the whole summer. Milking and looking after the dairy herd. We need to check out the mountain hut now and then, make sure there is plenty is bedding and that the routes into the valley are still safe.

Helping out is normal, Manu prepared lunch and mucked out the cow shed. Whilst I wandered the mountains looking for nine cows to throw salt at.

Happy to report that the trail down into the valley is as good as ever. Only to be tried when it hasn’t been raining. Far too easy to sink into the muddier sections.

At 1647m, with limited electricity. The nights are spent chatting and playing cards. Fancy your chances at a friendly game of poker? Then our ‘alm’ might be one of the highest and remotest games of Texas hold’em or seven card stud that you’ve ever played!

The mountain hut is basic, but there is something very nice about having to chop the wood to feed the fire for hot water and your evening meal. Also waking up to the sound of the cow bells ringing is something pretty special. Be warned though – this can be very early in the morning.
