- last minute mtb holiday -

Clearing a fallen logMountain biking photos in the Alps.

Guiding for one can be fun, testing, tiring etc. Imagine when we find out a last minute booking (only 20hrs from first call to pickup at the airport!) is from an ex-army PI instructor. Images of drills and many a press-up spring into mind. A man who has spent 20+ years of his life beasting cadets across the moors and fens of Great Britain was coming out for a week of mountain biking.

Even though slightly unorthodox cycling clothing was being used, some good quality Six-Six-One pads gave the necessary protection in the crucial areas. Roots in KitzbuehelWith a gutsy determination the climbs were sweated up and the downhills powered down. Lunch mainly consisted of a cheeky pint of cold lager. Largely provided by yours truly, for consistently losing at a beer fine game that we’d suggested for the week!

Challenge after challenge whether uphill or downhill saw us through a weeks mountain biking without a single days rest (the holiday was six rather than seven days long). There were notable moments such as a near clean run down Crystal Balls. A few special ‘bail out’ moments added to the excitement as well. Years of judo and gymnastics seemed to be helping! One of the highlights was the Kitzbuehel Freeride trail. The ridge run was a challenge that pushed us to the limit. Ellmau festivalOff cambered roots on a steep decline keeps body and mind thinking.

Evenings were with spent relaxing or taking in the weekly festivalsrunning in the local villages. Plenty of traditional music to be heard as well as a talented covers singer who really knew how to get the crowd going.
