- feast of assumption -

austrian familyThis might appear to be far off topic from mountain biking. However, it is a fact that for many in Austria, catholicism is an important part of their lives. Not wishing to be flippant but from a mountain bikers or a holiday makers point of view it is interesting to know when there are such religious days. The trails are often a bit quieter and getting the opportunity to watch and understand the local village traditions is important to me.

In Ellmau there was a church service where all the local farmers brought baskets of herbs, vegetables, fruits and flowers to blessed by the Priest. So wishing to do my bit to help out. I was out in the garden cutting chives, thyme, mint and parsley amongst other homegrown herbs. It might well be the first time in history that a Sussex trug has been blessed by an Austrian Priest!

In the photo above are Manu’s parents and her nephew and niece. Moritz and Maja. Oh, and the sussex trug!

So what exactly was this religious day. Well the Feast of Assumption has two main purposes. Firstly, – and I quote -

the happy departure of Mary from this life

and secondly,

the assumption of her body into heaven
