- building bridges – part I -

Photo Credit: Michigan Department of Transportation.Every year we are going to take on at least one ‘major’ project. This will depend on feedback from holiday guests, locals rider and the farmers in the area as well as whatever zany plans we conjure up. One of the rides near the farm, crosses a river that splits our land and forest and that of the neighbour farmer. The path used to be a marked trail however, due to lack of use it as become overgrown and unusable. So our ‘major’ plan is to build a bridge and give some life back to this stretch of path. There are a number of benefits that we can foresee from speaking with the locals.

  1. safer for people so that they don’t have to cross the main road.
  2. easier access for the farmer for some of the forestry work that he undertakes.
  3. avoiding having to carry your bike on the starts of a few of our routes on the Wilder Kaiser side.

So, anyone have any advice for building a bridge? The bridge in question needs to be approximately six metres long and one metre wide. Local sourced wood would seem like the obvious choice. Looking forward to hearing your comments.
